General Prep is getting your body up to a specific fitness level. How this is done is through training on hills, stairs, sleds, weight training, bodyweight training etc. This phase can last as long as 12 weeks or as little as four weeks, this depends on the level of fitness already obtained from prior seasons or length of break between seasons.
Specific Prep is the next phase, now you are just outside the start of the season, training is geared toward the specific and technical nature of your sport or event. This phase can last 10 weeks or less. For high school track this will cover most of the season. This will include block work, hurdle work, max velocity, speed work, speed endurance etc.
Competition phase leads into league, regionals, districts and the state championships. This time volumes will drop, intensity in work will be very high also in this phase if you have the experience you can start your taper leading into the championships.
